Also, don't forget Audacity which is great for recording/editing audio, and it's all free. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
VLC media player, while it may be uglier than Windows Media Player, runs way smoother with larger videos and can play pretty much any file format. I use it for everything: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
