Aimee Bender is a master of this; she writes stories with the most outlandish premises, and they end up tearing you apart. She has this one story in which a woman finds herself with four potatoes for children. There's another story in the same collection in which a pair of pumpkinheads (yes, their heads are literally pumpkins) give birth to a child who has an iron (you know...like the piece in Monopoly) for a head. The stories are simultaneously ridiculous and tragic.
