I think it's more a statement on just how insane and gullible GLaDoS wants to make you feel in the facility. If you can be convinced to value a companion cube - and not in a sexual way - you can be convinced to believe other things as well.

Wasn't the Companion Cube your best friend in Portal? I'm not sure if that changes to anything romantic in Portal 2, so no spoilers there, or maybe it's Glados?

That's why I said "not in a sexual way." There's nothing romantic about the companion cube, unless you infer something based on its having a heart stamped on it.

Of course I was just joking. There's no way a dirty metal cube with a heart stamped on each side will be found attractive by anyone except one of those corrupt cores near the end of 2.
