November 2020 Create Competition - Spooky Scary... Ghosts |

It's been too long since the last competition here at all. Time to fix that. A Create Competition is a level design contest where anyone can make a level or levels from a given prompt or theme, which are then judged and ranked, with feedback. Whether you're a veteran designer with hundreds of levels or have never made a level before in your life, your submission is welcome here!
For this month, I want to see a ghost level in CC2. You may use any map size or settings you'd like, and additional themes beyond that, but at its core the level should be able to be described as a ghost level. Ghosts are very flexible and can be used for a lot of different types of level, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)
Some administrative details:
- Submit your level(s) to me at IHNN#3459 on Discord or by PM on the forums before December 1st. Extensions will be granted for up to 1 week if a designer has let me know that they're working on something.
- You may submit up to 3 levels to the competition: if you submit more, only the most recent 3 will be judged. You may update your submissions at any time. These levels should be new, or at the very least unreleased.
- Levels should be solvable but do not require a replay. If you do not have CC2, you can still use CCCreator to create a level- let me know if you can't get anyone to give it a test and we can work something out.
- New for this competition: I will be taking a look at maps as I receive them and striving to respond with some quick first impressions and potential thoughts for ways it could be improved, unless asked not to. I'm going to try this based on some Discord discussions to try to help everyone create the best levels they can. I will not be playing the levels before judging, and will hopefully be able to stream the judging process either on my Twitch stream or to Discord.
- If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask either directly or in this thread.

I received 23 responses to the Discord/BitBusters.club survey posted on October 23 and have not received any further responses in a couple days, so I figure it is now a good time to post a summary of the results. For those who don't follow our Discord announcements, the purpose of this survey was to better gather information about how people are feeling about our Discord community (as well as opportunities to give feedback on the BitBusters.club project as a whole) and to give everyone the opportunity to put their name forward to serve our community in roles like Discord Mod and Scorekeeper if desired.

A lot of passionate chips players over the years have come together to make some great level packs, map editors, mods, you name it. I think it's great how all users are able to provide input and opinions and are listened to! The mod team has never felt like some separate group that is unreachable or untouchable.

What are some things you feel are NOT working well on our community Discord?
Here there were lots of concerns that I do not wish to share verbatim either because it would immediately identify the person who provided the feedback or because some of the concerns raised are best considered by the moderation team in private. That said, below I am including excerpts from the responses to this question that I feel are relevant to the community at large. Some of the responses have been edited or condensed to a summary to help preserve anonymity.
Please rest assured that if you do not see your specific concern(s) in this list that I did receive your full survey response and more complete responses will be shared with the moderation team.
Lastly, it is important to note that not every single item raised as part of these surveys will be taken as an "actionable item". As a path forward, I plan to post an additional thread soon to outline some changes in response to this survey that will attempt to address the highest priority items. However, I do still feel there is value in publishing as much of the feedback provided as possible.

There are constant interruptions and derailing comments during most discussions about the game. The overall atmosphere is exceedingly negative, with attacks on people, content and pretty much everything thrown around constantly. It all boils down to some people being unable to follow rule 1, and hiding behind rule 3 when confronted, only enabled by a fairly passive mod team.

One thing that does feel kind of weird is that often I will see a productive discussion talking about something serious, then see the same people jump into the random channel and talk down on the discussion. I think in general people should work on understanding that new players don't always know exactly where to find information on things, or in general that people should just be friendly and respectful online!

Some examples: whenever someone throws a tantrum over the reacts their messages get, a map of a level someone dislikes gets pulled up via Gliderbot and they rage about it, or when unnecessary responses are given from parties not involved in ongoing conversations, which in turn derails said conversations. Things like this I don't believe should have much tolerance in a server of several dozen active users, especially when ongoing topics and conversations that have true meaning are taking place.

I figure you all have a good understanding of why I left the server. I just wanted to make sure anyone new who joins the community is aware of this wonderful bit of history in the CCBBC.
Which of these scenarios makes more sense?: links to clones and servers related to clones being deleted from Niffler-owned spaces is part of a legal agreement they were strongarmed into by the company that delayed CC2's release for 15 years, as Allack said several times, and they just wanted a Discord server they're actually allowed to link to; OR everything related to Bridgestone is is all just an elaborate whimsical show Niffler is putting on to cut ties with the community they know is supplying CC with near-all of its resources and publicity (and which Chuck has actually held in good regard - hence the dat2c2g program being hosted here) while they're already on the verge of bankruptcy.
Comparing the Chip's Portal shutdown to this is like comparing a massive inferno to a dumpster fire - in this case nothing was ever irreversibly lost except weblinks posted in Bridgestone-controlled spaces (and things have been "lost" for a while - TW links were being taken off the Steam discussion boards since over a year ago). Allack having used obnoxious metaphors to describe the situation isn't an excuse for this behavior. And before anyone goes "I thought we dropped this topic but ok WeirdChamp", J.B. was still making crude comments about basic community relations being too difficult for Allack around when I left.
I don't believe Niffler appeals to anyone here's interests or that anyone should pretend they do (CC3D is and has been from the start an extremely watered down version of CC2, and they've had to concentrate most of their effort and time on that), I'm just disgusted that we've resorted to demonizing them due to things outside of their control. Nonetheless, please leave any comparisons to me being a Niffler shill in the replies below. Thanks.

Hello! I wrote a thing to play Chip's Challenge in a web browser, due to reasons. I think it's pretty cool and I hope you do too.
Current features as of May '21:
- Extremely good compatibility with both Chip's Challenge 1 and 2; defaults to a tweaked Steam ruleset that fixes some bugs, but can also play under Steam rules (~99% compatible), Lynx rules (~95% compatible), or MS rules (lol)
- Brand new (and unencumbered) artwork, sound effects, and music
- Phone and touchscreen support, with a dedicated compact layout
- Undo or rewind when you fat-finger a block into a corner, ten minutes into a horrible sokoban level
- "Step mode", where the world doesn't move until you do
- Separate recording of your best clock, best real time, best score, and whether you beat the level without undo
- One click to play any CCLP — but you can also load a CCL/DAT, individual C2M, or C2G zip/folder
- Built-in level editor that can create just about anything, plus lets you share individual levels via URL
- Support for custom tilesets, in either the compact TW layout or the CC2 layout
- Experimental support for some new tiles and other features, inspired by CC3D and a couple ill-fated fan spinoffs
- Small notices when you're playing a level that uses CC1 boots mode or "hide logic", so there are no surprises
- Tons of other nice little touches
Note that a small handful of CCLP (and canonical) levels don't work under the default rules, generally because of rule changes between Lynx/Steam (though one CC2LP1 level does rely on hook behavior that I deemed to be a bug).
