Trying Something New / GLASSACRE Review
Posted by: Joshua Bone - 20-Jan-2016, 9:57 PM - Forum: Blog Station - Replies (1)

So I've got this problem called Life (capital L) which continually manages to get in the way of my CC2 time. Wife, daughter, work, home improvement, photography, reading, artwork, etc. I keep meaning to contribute to the community but lately I'm realizing that it will never happen if I don't figure something out. So, this week I've been trying something new.

Every day, no matter how busy, I'm trying to spend 10 minutes playing through someone else's levels and 10 minutes designing my own. (I'm using the extremely useful app Habitica lately, and these are marked as daily tasks. Since I've come to terms with the fact that I'm unlikely to ever have the discipline to LP anything, I think the next best thing is to share short blog reviews every time I beat a level. It's something at least!

Today's level is (drumroll)...

GLASSACRE by Josh Lee, from Flareon1 v1.7.1.

Chips: 72, Time: 750

(SPOILERS, obviously)

Concept (3/5): It's a pretty basic idea, a 32x32 maze where the walls are all ice blocks sandwiched between thin walls. There are numerous short ice slides as well, many of which have bombs that need to be cleared. Gameplay consists of pushing blocks into bombs to collect chips, and is about as fundamental as it gets. The yellow and red keys open up rooms to a few more chips but they are trivial. And then there's the glass eye right at the beginning which, unless I'm missing something, does nothing at all, except to reveal that there are force floors under all the ice blocks.

Puzzle Difficulty (2/5): It's a casual play experience. The sokobans are easy but not trivial; my first time through I cooked the level by using a block on the wrong bomb, but overall it's pretty obvious which blocks go where. I particularly like the upper and lower rows of 6 bombs each, and for thematic continuity I could wish to see the yellow key placed at the end of the upper row to match the red key at the bottom.

Action Difficulty (1/5): There's plenty of time and no reason to rush. That's not to say I didn't totally and stupidly run into a bomb on my 2nd attempt.

Fun (4/5): I really enjoyed the level. It was fun and methodical without requiring a lot of focus. I liked the look of the ice blocks/thin walls. The ice slides through and between rooms really add interest to the maze. And I've always liked pushing blocks into bombs. I was a little disappointed by the secret eye. When I saw all the force floors under the blocks I was expecting some sort of grand finale or bonus area, especially with the missing thin wall at (18, 6). I also felt like the keys didn't add much to the level. But overall, I enjoyed it. Thanks to Josh for the experience.

Finally, here is a zero-commentary, completely unoptimized

of my solution.

Please let me know any comments, recommendations, or thoughts on how to make these short level reviews useful and informative!

 • 50 levels from NeverStopGaming

 • 6 levels from NSGRejects

 • 22 levels from 60 Minutes

 • 2 unreleased levels

Do to the way levels are ordered in this levelset, this could also be treated in respects to an actual levelset. The .dat file is named NSG-Extended for that reason.

What's New in Version 1.1
 • Made some minor changes to a few levels:
 • 8. Tourist Attraction: took out some fire to make fireballs more visible
 • 23. Limitation: changed recess wall to a blue wall to avoid being trapped
 • 35. Claustrophobic: added walls around teleporter
 • 40. Tour Up Hill: added sockets to fix bust
 • 75. Eruption: added a force floor to lower difficulty
 • 76. Notion Crazed: changed the description of the hint tile

I just realized I never made a thread for this set, so here is one.

If you like, feel free to talk about my latest and final CC1 set, JoshL6! Any comments or feedback about its contents are welcomed and appreciated. Slight smile

I should warn that it is unfinished and outdated at the moment. Should be finalized shortly into next month.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to say that I posted a new set on CCZone and pieguy's site titled NeverStopGaming.

You are more than welcomed to post anything related to the levelset here.

This set contains 50 levels that are compatible in both MS and Lynx.

The levels in this set attempt to maintain a steady rise in difficulty. From simplistic to moderate difficulty, this set welcomes all players of almost all skill levels to come and relax, enjoy, and most importantly have fun.

This set contains collaboration levels from both Josh and J.B. It also contains levels that participated in Create Competitions right here on CCZone.

Constructive criticism is always welcome!

January 2016 Create Competition - Palettes
Posted by: Ihavenoname248 - 01-Jan-2016, 8:32 PM - Forum: Competitions - Replies (28)

With the unofficial deadline for the last of the 2015 competitions having passed, why let the competitions stop? I've been tuning this idea for a couple months, so this should be a fairly interesting create.

Your job is to create a series of levels using a limited selection of tiles. There are 4 'palettes' in the levelset linked at the bottom of this post. The ranking for the competition will be done as follows:

[*]Each palette will be ranked separately, as with most creates
[*]Then, points will be assigned to each level in the same pattern as Chip Cup points (15/12/10/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1....).
[*]Then, for each person the three highest point values will be added together, and these results will be used for the final ranking.

What this means is that you may enter the competition even if you do not have a level for all four palettes. Additionally, don't stress if you can't come up with a good idea for one palette as it won't count against your final result.

Notes:

-Submissions are open until February 6th 13th, 2016*
! I will accept submissions until I release the submitted levels, judging will be done shortly after.
-The level must be new; it must not have been released earlier. This shouldn't be too much of a problem given the restriction.
-The levels must be solvable in MS, Lynx or both. If a level is found to be unsolvable, I will allow an update to make it solvable.
-Please give the level a cool name, and new password.
-You may submit more than one entry, but please keep the levels distinct from each other. Only the best level for each palette will be judged (though I will probably give feedback on all of them), and please keep the overall levels submitted count lower than 8 (2 per palette)
-Entrants receive the normal prizes: the "You're Winner!"-award, Chip Cup points, and "Tool Box"-award for first time entrants.
-Please ask about other unclear situations or wacky things you come up with.

Email and attach your submissions to jbardonjr at charter dot net
. I will reply with a confirmation that I have received your entry as soon as I can (this should be within 72 hours of the message being sent). I prefer if you use your username and this competition in the subject. Keep it short and simple, something like: "January Create - I am a person"

Levelset containing the palettes: http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/527-january-2016-create-palettes/
Allowed tiles: In picture format and text format below

[*]Chip, wall, hint, chip, socket, exit, thin walls, blue walls, hidden wall, invisible wall, recessed wall, teleport, directional force floors, toggle button and walls, tank button and tanks, all four keys and locks
[*]Chip, chip, socket, exit, recessed wall, dirt, gravel, fire, water, bomb, fire boots, flippers, thief, clone button and machine, trap and trap button, fireballs, gliders, walkers, pink balls, blue and red keys and locks
[*]Chip, hint, chip, socket, exit, block, thin walls, dirt, gravel, ice and ice corners, all force floors, bomb, skates, suction boots, thief, teeth, blobs, green key and lock
[*]Chip, hint, wall, exit, block, block cloners, fire, water, ice, bomb, flippers, skates, teleport, clone button and machine, toggle button and walls, tank button and tanks, trap and trap button, pink balls, bugs, paramecia, fireballs, gliders, yellow key and lock

*
If enough people want the submission deadline to be extended, I am open to doing so. (and have extended the deadline by an extra week)

 CCLP4 submissions closing date announced!
Posted by: Flareon350 - 01-Jan-2016, 7:49 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (7)

Hello chipsters and happy new year! I personally wish everyone the best for this year Slight smile

Now onto other news. As of this post there have been 3,300+ levels submitted so far! Not only that but we the CCLP4 staff only have roughly 200 levels remaining to test, which is outstanding.

We have been working hard (mostly) with testing and recommending some fixes for various levels that are unsolvable, incompatible, or busted. For the full list of submissions, please click here. If any of your levels are marked red and you wish to address any issues to those levels, please go ahead and make the changes you wish. Please note that because the spreadsheet is public and can be edited freely, we ask you to please refrain from doing so to avoid confusion. We will make the changes to the spreadsheet once your fixes are available for download and are re-tested.

The staff have also discussed a date to close off submissions for CCLP4, as various members have wondered when exactly they'll close. As of now, we have chosen to end the submission period on March 1st, 2016
exactly two months as of this post.

We are open to extend the date, if necessary. But as of now we have no reason to extend it. Please feel free to provide your opinion(s) on this date if you wish. We will be more than happy to discuss about this. Slight smile

Keep the submissions coming! Chip Win

- Josh (Flareon350) CCLP4 Staff Coordinator
