The "hot" topic is a little misleading, I'm not sure if Tom can edit its coding or not, but a topic becomes hot after about 20 posts by any (it could be the same user posting updates about their levelset 20 times). It would make more sense for it to be 20-30 posts in a short timeframe, and have the "hot" status go away if the topic temporarily or even for a long time (a year+, you'll find that often) and obviously if said topic is locked.
