Maze of the Fireball vs Fireball Maze
Posted by: mathgrant - 06-Apr-2012, 9:35 AM - Forum: Level Pack Previews - No Replies

A comparison of two versions of a level.

1. The first room in the old version involves placing a block in the tank's way to make it stop, and then pushing the block down so the tank and the block will create an obstacle for the fireball, making it turn left. A complete lack of Lynx compatibility meant this room was erased.

2. Even if the fireball could be directed up in Lynx, the hint tile blocks it from entering the maze proper. This hint tile was moved to the exit room.

3. The exit room and starting room are fireball-shaped in the new version, in order to strengthen the theme. The starting room even has a fireball to dodge – primarily to serve as a visual of how fireballs move (they turn right when they hit an obstacle).

4. One of the block cloners was moved up to make the level Pedantic compatible; the path exiting the maze was modified to allow the fireball to reach the green button target.

Will we ever live in a truly paperless society?
Posted by: BitBuster - 06-Apr-2012, 8:08 AM - Forum: General - Replies (15)

Ever since the advent of computers, people have been predicting the demise of paper products. Do you think we'll see this in our lifetimes? Is the day imminent when only people living in the past are interested in physical books, or is this just one of those inane predictions that people love to make any time there's a new technological innovation?

File category: CC1 Levelsets

All of the levels I make in 2012 will be here. Every level released before the CCLP1 deadline is a CCLP1 candidate, and is designed for both MS and Pedantic Lynx.

What's New in Version v 4.01
  • v 2: Added level 5, DIE. It's shaped like a die, and the enemies are blobs and walkers. I haven't beaten it yet, but I thought I'd share it anyway because I'm evil. This level was designed very quickly, so if you feel like changes are called for to make things easier on the player, go ahead and make 'em.
  • v 3: Added IT TAKES A THIEF, a slightly modified version of an old level.
  • v 4: Added two levels, bring the total to eight.

I turn 25 in May. Make me a level!
Posted by: mathgrant - 06-Apr-2012, 1:19 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (15)

It has been a tradition for me to create a logic puzzle every year based on my upcoming birthday. For example, here is the puzzle I created for my 25th birthday. If logic puzzles confuse you, the rules to this particular puzzle are linked to in the blog post.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to humor me with a CC level. Your level must somehow embed the solution to the above logic puzzle. Fwackoom, level 2 from grant2012.ccl (screenshot available on that page), is an example (albeit not an exciting one) of how a level can embed the solution to this smaller puzzle. Be creative!

I will not provide the puzzle's solution on request, although if you send me what you think is the solution, I will tell you whether it's right or not. Also, because I don't want to have to restrict you from uploading your levels to public servers or having nobody playtest your levels, you are allowed to collaborate to solve the puzzle or to create your level.

There may or may not ultimately be a prize (consisting of puzzle books), depending on how I feel. Either way, though, you win an internet should you succeed.

Double the last number. Note: This thread will get ridiculously filled with huge numbers in about 30 posts.

  My (Grant's) levels for CCLP1
Posted by: mathgrant - 05-Apr-2012, 10:52 AM - Forum: CCLP Discussions - Replies (9)

I have uploaded three level sets to the Yahoo group (and may upload them here, too, just because) which I would like considered for CCLP1. They are in the directory "Grant's CC levels", and they are, in chronological order, GRANTF.dat, Grant.dat, and grant2012.ccl. Many levels in the first two sets are not Lynx-compatible, so I will work on taking the same ideas and making them not only Lynx-compatible, but also better. For example, MAZE OF THE FIREBALL in GRANTF.dat isn't Lynx-compatible because it relies on the behavior of tanks in MS (stopping when an obstacle is encountered and remaining there until a blue button is hit); FIREBALL MAZE in grant2012.ccl removes the tank room altogether and adds two fireball-shaped rooms to strengthen the theme (one of which also has a fireball as a visual reminder to the player of how fireballs move, i.e. turning right when an obstacle is hit).

I would have much preferred to post this message on the newsgroup like a normal person, but I apparently lost my password to an account I forgot I had, and for identity-protection reasons, I'm not allowed to create another account with the same e-mail address. I really hope a message on CC Zone will work for submission purposes. . .

EDIT: Any feedback on levels in grant2012.ccl is greatly appreciated, especially regarding MS- or Lynx-compatibility or busts. If there are levels or ideas present in the other two sets which you would like to see adapted in a Lynx-compatible way, say so, and maybe it'll motivate me.

EDIT2: I changed the thread's title to have my name in it. That way, when a reply to this thread is the most recent one in this subforum, people will know whose levelset is being talked about!
