Actually, you do base 12 all the time when you tell time. (Technically it's mod 12). What's 9am plus 6 hours? 3pm.

9 + 6 = 13 base 12.

Anyway, you don't need to understand it. Windows Calculator will do it for you for anything you might need for programming.
