Anime |

Not expecting many responses (or any responses ) to this thread based on how 1) CC players generally don't seem like the type that would enjoy anime + 2) If there were anime fans here, a topic would have likely already been created, but it's worth a shot.
Any other anime fans here? If so, what have been your favourite ones to watch? My favourite one of all time is without question Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, a 12-episode work that is emotionally jarring as it is short. At first glance, everything about it radiates cuteness and cheer and happiness, but just wait...
(if anybody does watch it, give the ball a couple episodes to get rolling)
===
Since most people tend to be either unfamiliar with anime or have some misconceptions about it:
Anime refers to Japanese-style animated tv shows, movies, etc. (at least that's the English/Western definition; in Japan itself "anime" just refers to animation in general). Anime is considered a distinct "branch" of animation because it is so different stylistically than other forms: most notably in character design, but also in how cameras are used and in various other intangible areas (such as Japanese cultural influence).
Sadly, the nature of North American* culture means that for most people, animation is synonymous with Saturday morning cartoons aimed at extremely young kids. Classifying anime (or indeed animation as a whole) as "just for kids" is beyond wrong. While there is obviously anime aimed at younger audiences, a large portion of anime is directed at teenagers, young adults, and yes, adults. Additionally, most shows have considerable substance to them. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, for example (the one I brought up in the top part of this post) is more emotive and complex theme-wise than ANY show I've ever watched, animated OR "real", and it's challenged in those areas only by some of the greatest movies of all time. Would you have guessed that from the show's cover art? Nope, and that's exactly my point with this paragraph.
In any case, hopefully there are some other anime fans here.

* It's not just North America, but most CC Zone members are from here and our continent is by far the biggest offender. Speaking of North American culture, whenever an anime gains enough popularity to warrant a company picking it up and dubbing it with English voices, it always gets Bowdlerized in some form or another (often brutally), so try and watch anime in the original Japanese form with English subtitles instead...

CCLP1 Deadline has been extended! |

Greetings, Chipsters!
After much deliberation and feedback from the community, the CCLP1 staff has elected to extend the CCLP1 submission deadline to June 30, 2012.
While we understand that the submission period has been only a fraction of the time the CCLP3 submission period was open, we have already received an incredible response to the CCLP1 call for submissions. According to the official CCLP1 page, there are 3,411 levels that are currently in the running. For comparison's sake, the CCLP3 site lists 5,716 levels in its submission pool, 2,230 of which were eligible for voting.
With increased awareness of Lynx compatibility since CCLP3's release, we are expecting the percentage of eligible levels to be even higher this time around, particularly considering that the staff playtesters will be working more closely with designers on their levels' potential compatibility issues following the submission deadline. The staff has also heard from designers who have already created some levels and will submit their level sets in the days to come. The pool of 3,411 will definitely grow even larger in the months ahead.
Please note that after the submission deadline, the staff will finish reviewing the submitted levels and contact designers about compatibility fixes - all at the same time. Once this correspondance has begun, all designers will be given an official deadline by which they can implement any suggested compatibility fixes. After this fix deadline passes, voting will begin.
If you are a designer and would like to begin working with a CCLP1 playtester on any potential compatibility issues in your levels while submissions are still open, you are certainly welcome to do so - simply send an e-mail to any of the four people listed on the CCLP1 site who are serving as playtesters.
Happy chipping, everyone!

The downside of spring in the central US. |

It's not even really spring yet. Sigh.
So in case your head has been inside of a box or outside of North America the last 48 hours, there has been some major severe weather (and the link is just one example). But it gets better.
Friday is supposed to have MORE severe weather, and the synoptic setup is indicating it may be much, much worse than 2/28 + 2/29. So this may end up being the second fourth large tornado outbreak of the year and it's only the beginning of march. Fun, isn't it?

Create
Competition March 2012
The really important things:
- This level must be solvable in both MS and Lynx, but Pedantic compatability is not required.
- Email this level to Rockdet at rocket_rg (at) msn.com *
Be sure to specify who you are and what competition this level is for.
(*note: This isn't a direct email link to make it harder for spam bots scanning the web to grab my email address.)
-For this month's competition, you need to design a 9x9 level.
-Bonus points will be allowed if you place the 4 elements into it.
A few important notes:
- First, these are not rules, that would be too restrictive. They are useful notes and advice for what we're looking for.
- Second and most importantly, design something fun.
These levels will be due by 0:00 GMT April 1, 2012. If you're not sure what time that is by you, submit it a day early (or earlier!) to be safe.
Submission requirements:
Email to rocket_rg (at) msn.com
You must list your username and the competition that your submission is for in the title. Keep it short and simple, something like:
""From Lessinath - Create Submission.""

Stupid idioms |

I'm generally pretty forgiving when it comes to language. I love to read and write. I love words. But there are two things about language that I will not accept. I am more infuriated than I am amused by puns (that's a thread for another time), and I despise idioms.
Here's the thing about idioms: the semi-bad ones become crappy cliches. The truly bad ones are, well, truly bad. They don't become cliches, but they still exist, in a sense, to haunt.
There are no other levels of idioms. There's "semi-bad," and there's "bad." Kind of like Stanley Kubrick movies. But I digress.
The idiom I'm most hostile to at this particular moment is "I like the cut of your jib" (and all its varients). I hate it. I've read the historical origins of it, and that just made me hate it even more. It sounds horrible to begin with, and when you start comparing people's opinions to the sails of a ship, it descends into outright lunacy.
How the !@#$ did someone even come up with that? It's completely non-sensical! It's preposterous!
So, anyway...I hate idioms.
