Custom levels and the CC wiki
#1
Currently the Chip's Challenge wiki kind of allows people to make pages for some custom levels that are not in a CCLPx. There is some problems with this, like cluttering the level categories. Should http://chipschallenge.wikia.com/wiki/Cat...fficulty_5 just list official levels? On the other hand, some custom levels could use their own page, but not every level seems to have enough merit for this.

One alternative would be to allow custom sets to have their own page and any notable levels in that set could be expanded on in that space. Then the question expands to which custom sets should have their own page?

Would love to hear your thoughts. And if someone has more power over at the wiki than most users, I would love to suggest some other things too. Slight smile

It would become too cluttered with pages if we added every single level from every level set in my opinion. Best to only stick with official and notable ones I'd say.

There are over 11,000 levels on pie guy's site. Creating an article about every one of them would be almost impossible. Only some very hard ones and ones that have attracted the attention of the community (like the most insane level ever!, which already has an article) should have articles.

As for levelsets, there are a lot of them. Only the notable ones should have articles, one again.

That's just my opinion.

And by the way, in what levelset is ARGGGH?
CC is awesome!

CC2 sets (still being updated): C1059-CC2 --- Walls of CC2

CC1 sets (all complete): C1059-2 --- C1059-1 --- 1059PG01 --- C1059-Christmas --- C1059-INSANITY --- C1059-CCLP4

It is quite a lot, sure, but how exactly does a wiki become "cluttered"? It's not like those pages get in your way when you click on a link or search for something. Plus, it's a wiki. It's designed to handle lots of pages.

I don't think we must have all of those pages, though. We can just let other people add them on their own time.

Well, they can if you go to a page like http://chipschallenge.wikia.com/wiki/Cat...fficulty_5 looking for just official levels are something, like Miika said. It would be nice if Wikia had an option to see all pages that are in two specific categories; say "Levels with bold difficulty 5" and "Chip's Challenge 1 levels" (the latter category doesn't currently exist, of course, and there wouldn't be much use for it unless Wikia had that option.)
They call me Earthling, for I come from Earth.

Wikia does not have that function. We would have to make other categories, like "CC1 levels with bold difficulty 5", "CCLP2 levels with bold difficulty 5", "Custom levels with bold difficulty 5", etc.

I think there should be categories like "Official levels with difficulty 5" in addition to "Levels with difficulty 5", "Official levels quicker in Lynx than MS", in addition to "Levels quicker in Lynx than MS", etc. (Only CC1 levels and levels in a released CCLP would be allowed to exist in the "Official" categories.) I think that would be enough to reduce the "clutter" custom levels would add.

One other problem would be that many custom levels have the same name. We could fix this by putting the levelset name in parentheses after the level name in the article title if there's a conflict. A search on the level title should lead to both articles, after which the user can pick the correct one.

Anyway, I think the best contributors for custom levels would be the custom level designers themselves. The articles they write could contain not only strategies, maps, solutions, and bold times, but also developer's commentary and history if the designers so choose, which could be fun to read. No one would be required to make wiki pages for their own levels or for anyone else's, but could if they wanted.

Isn't there a way to make subcategories? I know Wikipedia has subcategories.

Plus, i almost never use the category pages, so i don't really care if they get cluttered Tongue .
