Chip Cup 2016 and Beyond
#1
Welcome to the Chip Cup 2016! This is where you will find the accumulated points from any competitions members have entered this year. At the end of the season, the person with the most points is awarded the prestigious Chip Cup!

The points for previous Chip Cups
have been collected in this other thread, but there is a lot of information there now, so it's good to split some of these newer things into its own thread.

UPDATE:
The Chip Cup
points for 2017, 2018, and even 2019 are (or will be) posted further in the thread. Check them out!

The first big question that would need answering is: CC2 competitions, yes or no? I'm leaning towards yes since the game has been around for a while, is easily obtainable and it'd be consistent throughout the year.

Secondly: There's been a grand total of 3 competitions since I've joined that haven't been Time Trial or Create: 1 Survival and 2 mini, one for solving (that one was great by the way) and one for storytime. The amount of Survival competitions seems right, but Treasure Hunts should definitely be done more often (CC2 is ripe for this opportunity with score for Treasure and time for Time Trial). Holiday competitions have also been nonexistent, though I'm not sure what the best thing to do about that is.

I am going to be hosting a CC2 competition next month, as I see no reason why we can't host them.

Oh, of course they can be hosted. The main question would be how the points count (separate from CC1? Together? CC2 exclusively? CC2 comps don't count?) I just recall last year that it was leaned against just because it would be a change halfway through the year, instead of consistent throughout.

Still leaning towards yes they count with the points for CC1 & CC2 going together, just because I don't think there will be enough to have a satisfying competition for one/both games if the points aren't counted together.

A funny thing happened with the Chip Cup 2016 points, as Jeffrey and I tied for the win with 101 points. Then a funny thing happened, when I later went back and checked those calculations, and noticed that I actually had 102 points. I let it go, as the results were already announced and over a year old. Then a funny thing happened today as I decided to check the 2016 scores again, but this time I got 101 points for both of us again. I tried looking through the threads if I missed a bonus score of some sort but couldn't find it. I guess I was simply mistaken in my calculations on the second pass at the scores.

I bring all that up now because a funny thing happened with the Chip Cup 2017 scores. I thought it was finally time to calculate who won the Chip Cup in 2017. It was a close race with the same culprits, and I piled up the scores to discover a new tie at 96 points. Yes, both Jeffrey and I were tied again for the Chip Cup! But then a funny things happened. I noticed that in the May 2017 Create Competition, some players were awarded the wrong amount of points. Instead of a scheme of 15,12,10,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1,1... the seven point position was omitted and five players were awarded one points less than was intended. I could leave that as was announced if it only affected myself, but I don't think it would be fair for the other four participants, so I would rather fix the mistake. I guess that leaves me as the sole winner of the 2017 Chip Cup! Yay! But wait, a funny thing happened. I hadn't calculated the Early Bird bonuses yet. These were an extra Chip Cup point
that debuted in 2017 for sending in a submission way ahead of the deadline. Jeffrey had two of these and I had only one. Yes, after checking all the scores, we are tied for the Chip Cup of 2017 at 98 points each. Funny things happen Slight smile

Below is a summary of all the competitions for 2017 and their Chip Cup points, and the ranking for the participants for the whole year. (V is for untied victory, W is for a tied win, much like and + were used in older lists.)

So a funny thing happened. When I posted the results above, the next day I realized a mistake. I noticed it the next day, but was too busy and distracted to rectify it immediately. It was also fun to watch if anyone else would notice it, but honestly it's buried in there and why would anyone else bother? The mistake has to do with the last competition, which awarded points a little differently and I didn't count any points for Jeffrey. Restoring these points gives you the sole victory of the season! Congrats Wink

Here are the corrected Chip Cup

Congrats to Jeffrey for keeping the Chip Cup
again! The points system awards regular participation, but you also won half the events of the year. Well done!

I adjusted the scores for mobius and ncrecc for the May 2018 Create Comp, as they had originally been marked down as receiving 6 and 5 points, though the standard scheme is 7 and 6. You'll notice that the first column is repeated from the last column of 2017, as was intended during the competition, but I'm not repeating that result in the summary below:

What a blast! I know 2019 has been pretty busy and we haven't been able to organize nearly as many competitions as we would have liked. However, we hope to change that this fall! I have a good amount of Time Trial levels saved up, several ideas for Create Comps, and some other ideas too. All I need is a bit of time to organize these. Thanks to everyone who has helped organize these things in the past! Your work and efforts have been greatly appreciated. Of course thanks also to everyone who has and keeps participating in these silly things, as without that this all would be pointless. ?

Keep chipping!

-Miika

P.S. I guess I also have to announce that just in case there aren't 'enough' competitions for this year, the Chip Cup will continue over to next year. This is a concept that has been around since the start, but we've never had to implement it, and the details haven't been worked out. One structure I had in mind was to keep a running tally of the last dozen or so competitions, with a minimum of all the competitions from the past 12 months, and the person with the most Chip Cup points during that time period would be "in possession of the Chip Cup".

CHIP CUP  2019 and BEYOND

As the past two years have been a bit lighter on competitions, we are switching up how the Chip Cup works. Instead of a yearly summation of points from that year, we will be taking the latest 12 competitions no matter how far back those span (well, except we are starting from the beginning of 2019). Currently we have had eight competitions since the end of 2018, so we are nearing the moment when this new system will award the Chip Cup to the points leader. Once we reach our more than 12 competitions, the first one will drop off the list (as long as it is older than a year). If this results in a change at the top of the Chip Cup points rankings, the new leader will "gain control" of the Chip Cup. Then we can compete for who can hold onto the Chip Cup for the longest!

(Some extra details still need to be settled on. At the moment I am thinking that the "official" date for when Cup switches hands is the first day of the month after the results for a competition have been released. This means that only one proper update happens to the ranking every month, and if several competitions end during a month, the Cup doesn't keep swapping around at every point. (I also hope we continue to release results within a month of the competition's deadline.) Additionally, competitions that are not "normal size" can be dealt on a case by case basis with regards to how to count when a competition drops off the calculations. If we ever have too many competitions in a short amount of time, we can consider going back to the old system, but I think the minimum 12-month clause should result in a similar system.)

But this begs the question, what does the current leader board look like? To answer that someone needs to make a summary of these past competitions... this really is a job for a proper spread sheet, but I figured it's just eight competitions so I'll throw it together here:
